The Talk: Mrs. Kenia Ador Agramonte, 2nd Secretary: Press and Cultural Attaché will give a talk on the current situation in Cuba and the advances made in the past year.
The Film: Sponsored by OCC and CPC Carleton, the celebration will involve a screening of Saul Landau’s Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up, a landmark film that chronicles terrorism directed at Cuba. Through interviews with Miami-based groups, members of the CIA and more, Landau puts the Cuban Five in proper historical context.

Join OCC and Canadian author Keith Bolender for the Ottawa launch of Voices From the Other Side: An Oral History of Terrorism Against Cuba. |

With an introduction written by Noam Chomsky, Voices examines the largely unknown history of violence against Cuban citizens since the earliest days of the Revolution through a series of emotional and personal testimonials/ Written by Canadian author Keith Bolender, the book is the first ever collection of interviews with dozens of Cubans who have suffered directly from these acts or have had friends or relatives killed. The Cuban government has documented more than 700 incidents of terrorism, resulting in the deaths of 3,500. Keith Bolender is a freelance journalist living in Toronto and has written extensively on Cuban matters for a variety of North American publications. Join us at Octopus Books for a rare opportunity to lean more about the affects of terrorism on the daily lives and experiences of the Cuban people.

Cuba's Medical Internationalism in Haiti |

Join OCC to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime discussion with Dr. Jorge Balseiro, past Director of the Hospital de Campana de Leogane in Haiti and an expert on both Cuba’s international medical efforts in Haiti as well as its domestic healthcare system. Dr. Balseiro has a long history with medical internationalism, serving as a clinical psychiatrist in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation of the Republic of Guyana, as director of the Cuban civilian hospital in the Republic of Angola, and, most recently, as director of the Hospital de Campana de Leogane in Haiti. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, he worked extensively with Cuban technical and medical personnel. Currently the Director of the University Psychiatric Hospital of Camaguey in Cuba, Dr. Balseiro will share his recent experiences in Haiti and take questions from the audience. Don’t miss this terrific talk!
